Management of patients with varicella-zoster virus infection

Varicella-zoster virus infection Isolation precautions Duration of isolation Placement for patients
Varicella Airborne, contact and standard Until lesions are dry and crusted Negative air-flow rooms (preferred) or single patient rooms with no contact with people without evidence of immunity (If negative air-flow rooms are not available)
Localized herpes zoster Immunocompetent patient: standard
Immunocompromised patient: airborne and contact precautions until disseminated infection is ruled out
Until lesions are dry and crusted Immunocompetent patients with herpes zoster should preferably not be with immunocompromised patients
